How to Descale a Keurig: Button Steps by Brewer
The right descale buttons for each Keurig brewer, how often to do it, and what to do if the brewer will not finish, from Keurig's own instructions.
Short answer: Here is how to descale a Keurig on most current brewers: empty the reservoir, pour in a full bottle of Keurig Descaling Solution plus one bottle of water, put a large ceramic mug on the drip tray with no pod, start Descale Mode, brew until ADD WATER lights, then rinse with fresh water until the descale notice clears. The buttons change by brewer, so find yours below first. K-Classic, K-Mini, K-Duo Gen 1 and K-Duo Plus brewers use a soak method instead.

Before you start
Gather a sink, fresh water, a large ceramic mug and a bottle of Keurig Descaling Solution. Keurig says not to use a paper cup. Empty the reservoir, take out any water filter and make sure the pod holder is empty.
Allow time for your model. Keurig gives about 15 to 20 minutes for the K-Brew+Chill, about 45 minutes for the K-Classic group and about 75 minutes for K-Duo Gen 1 and K-Duo Plus brewers.
How to descale a Keurig: find your brewer

Steps for button-mode brewers
- Add the solution. Pour the entire bottle into the empty reservoir. Fill the empty bottle with water and add that too. Do not insert a pod. Put a large mug on the drip tray.
- Enter Descale Mode. Use the buttons in your row of the table.
- Run the solution through. When the button flashes, press it. Pour the hot liquid into the sink. Repeat until the ADD WATER light comes on.
- Rinse. Empty and rinse the reservoir, then refill it to the MAX line with fresh water.
- Brew fresh water. Press the flashing button and pour each brew into the sink. Keep going until the DESCALE notice turns off. The brewer then leaves Descale Mode and is ready to use.
K-Duo (Gen 2): Also put the carafe on the heating plate. The solution stage runs a single-serve cycle and then a carafe cycle. The rinse is two single-serve brews and one carafe brew.
SMART brewers: Remove the filter, then follow the screen. Press the flashing BREW button to dispense 12 oz, discard it and repeat until the screen says ADD WATER. Rinse and refill, then brew until the screen says DESCALE COMPLETE.
Steps for K-Classic, K-Cafe, K-Latte, K-Elite, K-Compact and K-Select
- Turn the brewer off. Pour in the entire bottle of solution and one bottle of water. Turn it back on.
- Put a large ceramic mug on the drip tray, lift and lower the handle, choose the largest size and brew. Pour the mug into the sink.
- Repeat until the add water light comes on.
- Let the brewer stand for 30 minutes while still on. Discard any leftover solution and rinse the reservoir thoroughly.
- Fill to the max line with fresh water and run at least 12 rinsing brews at the largest size, refilling as needed.
Steps for K-Mini and K-Mini Plus
These use only part of the bottle.
- Turn on the brewer. Pour one-third (4.6 oz) of the solution into the reservoir and add fresh water to the max fill line.
- Put a large ceramic mug on the drip tray, lift and lower the handle and press BREW with no pod. Pour it out.
- Repeat, but power off as soon as the solution starts to dispense. Let it stand for at least 30 minutes.
- Power on, lift and lower the handle, press BREW and discard the contents.
- Repeat the first brew with the largest fill of fresh water only, two more times.
Steps for K-Duo Gen 1 and K-Duo Plus models
These steps cover the K-Duo Gen 1, K-Duo Essentials Gen 1, K-Duo Special Edition and K-Duo Plus. Keurig puts this at about 75 minutes.
- Power off and remove the filter. Pour in the entire bottle and one bottle of water.
- With a mug on the tray, press OZ/POD and then 12 to run a single-cup brew. With the carafe on the plate, press CUPS/CARAFE and then 12 to run a carafe brew. Pour both into the sink.
- Let the brewer stand for at least 30 minutes. After 20 minutes, discard any solution left in the reservoir and rinse it thoroughly.
- Run 4 carafe brews with fresh water, refilling to the MAX line each time, then 4 single-cup 12 oz brews.
How often to descale a Keurig
Keurig gives two answers. Its descaling page says every 3 to 6 months, and its maintenance guide says every 3 months or when the descale light turns on. The sensible reading is to follow the light and go toward 3 months if your water is hard, since Keurig says the timing depends on your water's mineral content.
If you postpone the descale reminder, Keurig says it returns in 6 weeks and only clears after a real descale. Keurig also recommends filtered or bottled water.
If the brewer will not fill or stops partway
Keurig says the solution may produce foam. In its K-Duo Gen 1 and K-Duo Plus instructions, it also covers heavily scaled brewers that give little or no output:
- Turn off and unplug the brewer.
- Discard the solution, rinse the reservoir and refill it with fresh water.
- Plug it back in and repeat the fresh water rinse.
- If it still will not run, unplug it for at least 30 minutes before you continue.
Common mistakes
- Using the wrong buttons. A K-Express uses 12oz to start, while a K-Express Essentials uses 8oz.
- Leaving the filter in. Keurig's steps have you remove it first.
- Using a paper cup. Keurig specifies a large ceramic mug and says not to use a paper cup.
- Stopping after the solution stage. The descale is not finished until the rinse clears the notice.
Next step: Find your brewer in the table, then check that you have a full bottle of solution before you start. If you also own an espresso machine, see how to descale a Breville espresso machine.
FAQ
Can I descale a Keurig with vinegar?
The Keurig instructions we read use Keurig Descaling Solution and do not offer vinegar as an option, so we follow that here.
Is scale harmful?
Keurig says calcium and scale are non-toxic but can hinder your brewer's performance.
What else should I clean?
Keurig suggests washing the drip tray, pod holder and funnel weekly, wiping the outside with a damp cloth and rinsing the reservoir regularly. If your brewer takes a filter, Keurig says to replace the cartridge every 2 months or 60 tank refills.
Do espresso machines work the same way?
No. Button sequences differ by maker too. See our guide on how to descale a Breville espresso machine.
How we researched this guide
We read Keurig's descaling page and maintenance guide on November 7, 2026, and grouped its instructions by button sequence. We did not descale these brewers ourselves. If your brewer's Use & Care Guide differs from this summary, follow the guide.
